Dr. Jazma Sutton’s research focuses on the histories of slavery and freedom in the U.S. with a particular interest in African American women’s history and the Midwest. She is currently working on a book project that chronicles Black women’s transition from slavery to freedom in rural antebellum Indiana and the ways in which they expressed their ideas of citizenship through freedom suits, anti-slavery activism, and material culture. Her recent publications include an article in the Digital Humanities Quarterly titled, “Reaping the Harvest: Using Descendant Archival Practices to Create Sustainable Digital Archives with Rural Black Women," and two digital history projects: “Remembering Freedom: Longtown and Greenville History Harvest” an open-access digital archive and "The Black Midwest at Miami University," a student-created digital archive and website.
